5 Home Office Décor Tips That Will Improve Productivity

1. Establish Privacy Without Feeling Closed Off.

I wanted to create a private space that I can close off when needed, but that still felt open, so I chose French doors, which I would highly recommend. I love the natural light that flows in from the dining room window and the sense of openness it creates. My office is a small space, but the glass doors and window make it feel bigger than it is.

2. Avoid Clutter.

When a home office feels cluttered or messy, it’s easy to get distracted and focus on tidying instead of working. Before I had built-ins installed, I was constantly stacking up packages, mail and files everywhere. It was literally driving me crazy! I envisioned the built-ins you see now to create a visually beautiful space to display things like my coffee book addiction, pictures and mementos. But it’s what is behind the cabinets that is the best part! I now have three huge filing cabinet drawers to file contracts, invoices and receipts for an easy and organized system. I also love that I can hide my printer and scanner and other not-so-glamorous office supplies. The new space feels organized and keeps my thoughts more organized as well.

3. Don’t Shy Away From Color.

A home office doesn’t have to be drab or include only “office furniture.” My pink carpet and orange chairs brighten up the room and keep me cheerful during the day. The chairs belonged to my grandparents and are a nice sentimental reminder during the day. Surround yourself with pretty things that make you happy and it will make every work day feel more inspiring.

4. Surround Yourself With Inspiration.

My bookshelves are lined with books and mementos that inspire and motivate me throughout the day. If I’m feeling overwhelmed or uninspired, I like to take a quick break to flip through a book or a magazine for a creativity boost.

5. Prioritize Lighting.

Natural light was key for me when it came to my home office and I’m lucky to have a big window overlooking our front yard. I also made sure to incorporate lights into my built-ins for maximum lighting that is also aesthetically pleasing. The chandelier is also one of my favorite pieces in the whole house, and it really ties the room together nicely in addition to providing overhead lighting.
